Jakarta Forum-ANTARA News - Bengkulu and its surroundings had in the last four months been shocked by 124 earthquakes with a magnitude of 0.2 to 5.7 on the Richter scale.
The tremors were more frequent in the same period a year earlier, reaching an average of less than 100 tectonic quakes, head of the Kepahiang Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Bengkulu, Dadan, said on Thursday.
He said in January 2011 there were 48 tremors, in February 30, in March 23, in April 23, and in May 2011 once with a magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale.
The people had been told not to panic and stay calm following the most frequent quakes because they are reducing energy, and most unlikely causing major quakes like those in China recently. (*)
