Gordon Brown has alleged News International used "known criminals" to get access to personal information when Labour was in power.

The former prime minister accused the newspaper group of having links to the "criminal underworld".

And he accused the Sunday Times of running a story "with the purpose of bringing me down as a government minister".

He told the BBC an inquiry should look at how the company abuses its power.
