A Royal Wedding Encore

After walking down the aisle, plenty of brides wrap their wedding dresses in plastic and consign them to the back of the closet. Not Kate Middleton.

From July 23 until October 3, her gown, tiara, and even portions of her wedding cake will go on display as part of Buckingham Palace's summer exhibition, "The Royal Wedding Dress: A Story of Great British Design.

Sarah Burton Speaks

In a film that accompanies the exhibition, designer Sarah Burton speaks at length about the dress for the first time. She chose to work with satin gazar because of its lightness, and worked hard to keep the dress symmetrical—even when Kate was moving. "To do this we weighted with canvassing the whole of the bottom of the dress so when she walked down the aisle it wouldn't crumple."

All the Pretty Details

After cutting hundreds of lace flowers and shamrocks, Burton and her team placed each of them on a paper pattern of the dress to finalize the design. They then sent lace to the Royal School of Needlework at Hampton Court Palace where seamstresses sewed them onto satin fabric.
