ArtsBeat: 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' Leads at the Box Office

Computer-generated primates, yes. Extreme scatological humor? No. That sums up Hollywood’s weekend, as “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” took in about $54 million at North American theaters and “The Change-Up,” an ultra-crude comedy (it opens with a baby defecating in Jason Bateman’s mouth), landed with a $13.5 million thud.

The strong No. 1 result for “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” which cost 20th Century Fox about $100 million to produce and won mostly rapturous reviews, validates that studio’s bet on computerized visual effects; no live apes were used to make the movie. “The Smurfs” (Sony Pictures Entertainment) finished second, selling about $21 million in tickets for a two-week total of $76 million, according to Hollywood.com, which compiles box-office data. “Cowboys & Aliens” (Universal Pictures/DreamWorks Studios) limped along third place, taking in an estimated $15.7 million in its second weekend for a total of $67 million.

In a signal that movie audiences may be tiring of harrowing raunch, “The Change-Up” flopped in fourth place; it cost Universal Pictures and its financing partner about $53 million to make. “Captain America: The First Avenger” (Marvel Studios/Paramount Pictures) was fifth, taking in about $13 million for a three-week total of $143 million.
