Darsem, an Indonesian migrant worker who was nearly executed by Saudi Arabia authorities, denied that she had spent funds donated by her sympathizes on items such as jewelry.
Darsem was put on death row for killing her Saudi employer, who had reportedly tried to rape her. She was freed after the Indonesian government paid a Rp 4.7 billion (US$554,600) “blood money” ransom to the family of the employer.
According to Darsem, she used the donations to help the elderly, construct a house of worship and renovate a house that she had purchased.
“The house under renovation is for me and my child to stay in,” she said.
She added that she bought gold jewelry for her family members as an investment.
“Gold is easy to sell if I need [money] someday,” she added, as reported by kompas.com.
Local TV station TVOne reported that their viewers had raised Rp 1.2 billion to help the migrant worker.
