Police to check church visitors after bombing

The police say they will sweep churches and check church visitors across the country following Sunday's suicide bombing in the GBIS church in Surakarta, Central Java, which killed one and injured 15 others.

National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Anton Bachrul Alam said Sunday afternoon in Jakarta that it was part of security measures aimed at preventing similar attacks on other churches.

He said church visitors would be checked to prevent suicide bombers disguising themselves as visitors from entering churches and committing ill deeds.

“It's surely part of our concerns to guarantee people's safety in carrying out their religious activities. We will conduct sweeps before they perform the activities.

“We will check those [wanting to enter churches]. We don't want the same thing to happen twice. This applies to all churches throughout Indonesia,” Anton said as quoted by kompas.com.

He added that the police, meanwhile, were still investigating the type of explosive used by the suicide bomber in the Surakarta attack.
