MODERATE QUAKE HITS BENGKULU

Jakarta Forum - Bengkulu, Jan 31. An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale jolted Bengkulu province on Sunday, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said.

It said the quake which occurred at 02.02 p.m. was centered 14 km southeast of Mukomuko area in Bengkulu at a depth of 33 km.

The quake did not trigger a tsunami warning.

The temblor was felt by people living in Bengkulu municipality and North Bengkulu district. But there was no immediate report of casualties or material damage.


Last week, a magnitude 5.3 quake also hit the province.

The province was once devastated by powerful quakes measuring 7.3 and 7.0 on the Richter scale in 2000 and 2007 respectively, killing tens of people and injuring hundreds of others.
