Helicopter reportedly crashes near Slave Lake, Alberta, Canada, where prime minister visited

A helicopter involved in the Alberta firefighting effort has gone down near Canyon Creek, about 24 kilometres west of the fire-ravaged town of Slave Lake, Alta.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada confirms a Bell 212 helicopter owned and operated by Campbell Helicopters of Abbotsford, B.C. went down in water about 1½ metres deep.

An air ambulance was sent from the STARS base in Grande Prairie after a call was received around 3:04 p.m

The Prime Minister's Office confirms that Prime Minister Stephen Harper was not in the helicopter that reportedly went down.

Harper was in the area Friday to survey the devastation caused by Sunday's wildfires in Slave Lake.
